Ditch the Shampoo: The Healthy Healing Shampoo Alternative

Beware of the toxins in your shampoo…not only damaging your hair, but soaking into your scalp. A couple years ago, I spent hours on the floor on Whole Foods reading every shampoo label…ONLY one met my standards at the time.

Even “Natural” and “Organic” shampoos contain harmful ingredients like sodium lauryl sulfate. Sodium lauryl sulfate is known to be highly irritating and dangerous. It cause damage to your hair and hair loss; and when absorbed into the body may be linked to breast cancer, infertility, and cataracts.

I’ve been searching for the perfect homemade shampoo because the “beauty” industry isn’t very regulated…so there could still be hidden stuff in my shampoo! For awhile I made my shampoo and conditioner from herbs, and sometimes it turned out good and other times not so much. So I’m happy to say I’ve  finally found a recipe I like!!! My hair feels AMAZING! It feels thicker, no fly aways, not to dry or to oily.

Ingredient #1 Egg-I’m sure everyone has used egg on there hair from time to time, as have I…The egg feed your hair protein and vitamins, but after a week or so shampoo completely takes all the luster and shine away. For this recipe I highly suggest you get fresh free ranged eggs from someone local (the eggs don’t have a smell and have more vitamins in them).

Ingredient #2 Raw Honey- There’s been a recipe going around about using honey in water to shampoo your hair. Honey, believe it or not is a great cleanser and antibacterial. Some people have issues with this weighing down their hair, others it works great for. We are just using a small amount of honey in this recipe, and mixed with the other ingredients you wont have a bit of problem!

Ingredient #3 Lemon or Apple Cider Vinegar- the skin has a natural Ph around 4, so the lemon or the apple cider vinegar will sooth the scalp, keep away dandruff, and cleanse the hair.

Mix all the ingredients together well with a fork. Apply to hair evenly leave in for 5-20minutes (the longer you can leave it in the better). I don’t find a need to wash my hair more than every other day using this recipe.

Fermetting food- Make your own cultured veggies ( Sour Kraut)

Making your own fermented foods is the best way to ensure the quality of what you’re eating. Many fermented products in the store are pasteurized, killing all the good bacteria (probiotics). It’s also very cost effective to make your own!

Eating probiotic rich foods helps with a number of thing…autism, depression, memory digestive problems, eczema, acne, toxins…fermented foods are beneficial to almost every condition.

So lets make some sour kraut!

Items needed: Ball jar, Sea or Himalayan salt, Bacteria packet (optional), water, sugar, cabbage), a few whole cabbage leaves.

1. I use a bacteria packet to ensure I’m getting specific bacteria I want. You will grow whatever bacteria is present in the air and on the food, and that’s fine.

If you’re using the bacteria packet, mix the packet with 1Tablespoon of sugar in about 1/2 cup of 90ish degree water. If the water is to warm it will kill the bacteria. The sugar feeds the bacteria, honey is antibacterial so it could inhibit some bacteria growth. ALL the sugar will be eaten by the bacteria in the fermentation process. Let this mixture sit for about 20 minutes. You can get bacteria packets HERE

2. Cut up the cabbage, if you’d like it to have a finer texture put it in the food processor. You can add a little bit of other fruits/veggies/or herbs to this for flavor. Some people put in apple or carrots, others use a little thyme.

3. pour the bacteria/sugar water over your cabbage (and other veggies/fruits/herbs), add 1 tbs of salt. Mix well. If you’re not using a bacteria packet, add 1 tbs of sugar now.

Salt keeps bad bacteria from growing. *Note there has been no reported incidences of food born illness from fermented foods. When done properly, it’s considered safer than consuming raw foods.

4. Pack your mixture tightly down into ball jars. Cover with water. Pack a cabbage leave around the top to keep everything fully submerged.

5. Screw on the lid. Place in a dark area for 7-10 days, then  refrigerate. Ready to eat! will be good for 6 months to a year in the fridge.

CAUTION – COOKING sour kraut will destroy the good bacteria. Not advised to heat!

How to get Clear Skin: Cure Acne Naturally

Getting Clear Beautiful Skin

Acne is caused by a number of imbalances in the body; lack of good gut bacteria, more nutrition, rancid oils, irritating skin care, and built up toxins.

1. Fermented Foods- Fermented foods are rich in beneficial bacteria ( pretty much everything in the store is garbage). Here’s a great way to get started with Fermented foods http://bebeautifulthehealthyway.com/?p=552

2. Milk thistle- Our digestive system is our first line of defense for detoxing (the fermented foods get your digestive system healthy and able to detox). Your liver is your second line of defense, and needs a little love too, especially when you have acne. Milk thistle has in some cases even reversed substantial damage to the liver. It’s great for everyday up keep. You can get Milk Thistle HERE

3. Juice Plus-Juice Plus is 17 fruits and vegetable in a capsule. Juice plus is juiced and dried in a manner that the nutrients are preserved. 30 clinical studies show Juice Plus’s powerful effect in the human body, delivering key nutrients to every cell. Each of the fruits and vegetables energetically align with an organ in your body…giving your body what it needs down to the energetic level.

4.General Diet-We want to get rid of bad oils in the body, this causes damage to the digestive system leading to acne. Stay away from anything with canola, cotton seed, or hydrogenated oils. Use mainly organic extra virgin olive oil, and organic cold pressed coconut oil. Olive oil has a low heat tolerance and will go rancid, so its not ideal for cooking. Coconut oil is very stable and can be used for cooking.

Eat whole food: Fruits, vegetables, free ranged organic meat, NON homogenized dairy…It’s important to stay away from GMOs, buy organic as often as possible, and try to source your meat locally.

5. oil cleansing- Soaps damage the protective barrier of our skin, leaving our skin sensitive and aging it. As crazy as this may sound, oil cleansing is the answer; whether you have oily skin or dry skin, and yes even acne. Simply put a small amount of COLD PRESSED coconut oil on a wet wash cloth and wash your skin with it. Oil cleansing helps balance your skins sebum and protect your skin.

6.- essential oils-

My favorite topical blend comes from Living Libations  called Zippity Dew Dab…it’s the perfect combination of essential oils.”Niaouli, Melaleuca quinquenervia viridiflora – Brimming with gentle antiseptic and anti-bacterial properties, Niaouli is quite helpful for acne issues. Niaouli is astringent without being too drying and it supports healthy immune response. Niaouli, also known as MQV, is an endocrine tonic. As a milder alternative to Tea Tree, Niaouli is also related to the same family, Myrtaceae.

Carrot Seed, Daucus carota– Queen Anne’s lace lights skin and face. Wild Carrot Seed essence is a highly nutritious oil for the skin activates healing. It is regenerating and brings balance to both oily and dry skin. This’ mildly sweet, green and woodsy aroma is inspiring.

Immortelle, Helichrysum italicum – This flower’s everlasting felicity revivifies every filament of your being. Also known as Everlasting or Helichrysum, Immortelle is truly a superior gem for skin care.  It has unique properties that promote healing and cell rejuvenation while reducing inflammation. Immortelle protects new skin cells and is a free radical scavenger. It is particularly wonderful for reducing scars. Immortelle is soothing to the skin, clearing keloids and revivifying the skin at a deep cellular level.

Rosemary, Rosmarinus verbenone – Rosemary is an herbaceous revive-alive-verve-tonic with a refreshing, penetrating aroma. This species of Rosemary is particularly suited to skin care with antiseptic, clarifying and lymph stimulating oil benefits. Rosemary helps with tissue and cell rejuvenation.

Blue Tansy, Tanacetum annum – Blue Tansy lends its beautiful, deep indigo blue hue to Zippity DewDab. This is due to its high azulene content which offers significant antioxidant protection and extraordinary anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial support. Blue Tansy aids Couperose and has a deliciously sweet herbaceous aroma.

Thyme Linalool, Thymus officinalis linalool – Thyme Linalool is a gentle, non-irritating species of Thyme. It is a potent antiseptic, anti-infectious and anti-microbial ally for the skin. Thyme Linalool stimulates skin healing and is tonifying.”

How to get fermented foods in your diet-Day 2:How to Ferment Protein Powders

Fermenting protein powders can be very beneficial. Fermenting them will substantially increase the bioavailable protein and create beneficial bacteria for your body. Many protein powders contain soy; soy is only ok to eat when fermented.

Here’s a recipe for fermenting protein powder

*Note to all vegans and others who wish to use coconut water. Kefir buds must be started in real milk, then you can wash them off and begin them in coconut water.

Put kefir buds, 1 cup of milk or coconut water, and 1 serving of protein powder into a ball jar. Put it in a dark spot for 36 hours. Shake the jar a couple times during this period. After 36 hours strain the kefir buds out, using a spoon to press your kefir protein through he strainer. Start your next batch the same way.

How to get Fermented Food into your diet: Day 1

Hey Everyone!

Have you been on antibiotics at ANY point during your life? After 5-7 days on antibiotics, you have NO bacteria in your body. We need good bacteria. Here are just some of the amazing this that the bacteria in our bodies do…

  • Eat toxins and carry them out of the body (even mercury and other heavy metals)
  • make neurotransmitters like serotonin (people who  replenish their gut bacteria have noticed improvements with depression)
  • They’re about 85% of your immune system
  • Your gut and skin reflect each other, lack of gut bacteria can lead to acne, psoriasis and more
  • a link has been shown between autism and a lack of good bacteria.

You need to consume fermented foods on a daily basis to keep your gut bacteria at optimal levels.

Coconut Kefir is a great place to start…

1.Use 1 serving of raw organic young coconut water powder, or the water from one fresh young coconut. Put in a ball jar

2. Place activated Kefir grains in the coconut water. Put the lid on. (get Kefir grains HERE)

3. Put in a dark place for 36hrs.

4. Open and strain out the Kefir grains, drink the coconut Kefir and put the grains back in the jar a reap the process.

Are you missing a nutrient for beauty? Silica for beauty

Are you missing a nutrient for beauty? Silica is key for young youthful skin. Today, we find a major deficiency in silica…this is due to the lack of minerals in the soil our foods are grown in. Silica is the forgotten mineral that is essential for so many things in the body…

Are you missing a nutrient for beauty?

1. Connective tissue strengthening and support (joint, ligaments and muscles)

2. Bone strengthening and support through enhanced calcium absorption

Within bone, silica is the essential component making  up the collagen matrix upon which calcium is deposited. This  relationship is so fundamental that it is truly impossible to form bone  without both calcium and silica. In fact, researchers are exploring the  possibility that supplementation of silica, rather than calcium may be  what is needed for maintaining strong bones.

3. Strengthening of teeth and gums

4. Cardiovascular support Silica in adequate quantities creates supple arteries  and veins and is effective in removing plaque from artery walls. This  has actually been known since 1958 when Loeper and Loeper found  arteriosclerotic artery walls showed excessively high levels of calcium  and lower than normal levels of in silica.

5. Stomach and digestive disorders

Most disorders of the stomach and digestive tract  involve a degradation of the lining in the G.I. tract.  Silica is an  essential element involved in rebuilding and maintaining these tissues.

6. Immune system enhancement

Our skin is our first line of defense against naturally  occurring bacteria, virus’s, and other pathogens.  Silica promotes and  maintains healthy skin tissue.

7. Wound and burn healing

Silica stimulates the rapid re-growth of damaged skin tissue.

8. Thinning hair, brittle nails, and dry skin

All of these external parts of our body are collagen based.

9. Aluminum elimination enhancement http://www.evolutionhealth.com/Minerals/silica-benefits.html

Are you missing the nutrient for beauty? How to we get more silica in our diet? Foods high in silica include; steal cut oats, millet, cucumbers (mostly in the skin), onion, and garlic. Herb- horsetail is the highest herb in silica, it’s best to take as a tea. You can also use a high quality silica supplement.
